MG1 / MD1 ECU Lock - The story behind

Starting in mid-2020, Bosch introduced an un-downgradable low-level firmware and cryptographic bootloader update (utilizing advanced Hardware Security Modules or HSM) for MG1 and MD1 ECUs. Manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi locked these units to enforce strict cybersecurity, block unauthorized performance tuning, and preserve legal emissions compliance. 

Some of the technical nature of the lock consists of Hardware Security Module (HSM), Low-Level Bootloader and/or Immutable Firmware.

Because of this, it is difficult for owners of vehicles equipped with such ECUs (those post 2020 BMW's, GR Supra's, Mini's and more) to get an aftermarket tune to customized their vehicle.
